Here the module Cookbook:ImagesAutoResizing is used. If the Img: markup is used, the original image gets dublicated to a tumbnail and an bigger image. The original image is untouched. The tumb image gets displayed with a link to the bigger one.

The original image is resized to 250 width. The image is a link to a bigger one of 600 width.
