Summary
how easy is it to extend tbook?

Description
We have some mismatches between wiki markup and tbook elements. Do we:
  1. use the tbook dtd as the core, but add capabilities to cover features available in wiki markup but not in tbook; or
  2. use the xhtml dtd as the core, with a supplement to cover cases where PmWiki uses styles to represent semantic constructs

Proposed solution
There is no free lunch. We decided to pursue the first option initially, as this appears to be less work. James noted that use of XSLT may create a maintenance problem later. There are 3 areas for trial:
  • processing newline characters [\\=] at the end of a line
  • inline markups like big and small with no tbook equivalent
  • controlling heading levels, which may not nest properly

Resolution
It all just worked. We aim to make as few changes as are necessary to achieve the desired results.
