- Summary
- Accented characters cause background colour to break
- Type
- Bug

- Description
- If text with a background colour set (e.g. using highlighting markup) contains accented characters, this causes LATEX to die. The cause is the translation of accented characters into LATEX code, which includes a check to see if maths mode is active. This \ifmmode … \else … \fi construct is not supported inside the soul package commands.

- Proposed solution
- There is currently no simple fix for this. The soul package seems to be very fragile — it also breaks if one highlights text in a title. The answer may be in the manual.
